This week saw an unexpected managerial merry-go-round which could potentially undermine the promotion aspirations of League Two clubs Mansfield Town and Swindon Town.
Rumoured for a few hours before it was announced on Tuesday evening, Steve Evans quit Mansfield having got the club into the play-off positions and well set for a promotion push over the final months of the season.
Twenty-four hours later, Evans was named the new boss at League One Peterborough and with news emerging of new investment in the club, it would be widely expected Evans has achieved a hefty pay rise for him and assistant Paul Raynor.
Coupled with a potential war chest should Evans guide ‘Boro in the Championship, it’s clear to see why he made the move now and not wait until the summer and. There is still the possibility that the Field Mill outfit will face their former boss next season having made a very swift appointment themselves.
David Flitcroft has made the move north from Swindon Town, another team with eyes on promotion and just three points behind Mansfield.
According to reports, Flitcroft sees the move as ‘going onto better things’ but could easily end with his former side moving up and the Stags looking at another season in League Two, it’s fine margins to work with.
Swindon, meanwhile, are left in the caretaker hands of Matty Taylor and there is no indication they are in a rush to appoint a new manager. They do have an extra weeks breathing space after the postponement of the weekend’s visit from Yeovil Town.
As with the players transfer window, should there be a similar window for managers?
It’s something that has been mentioned in the past, but not taken to too many column inches. A window for managers and coaches might mean however we end up with the same crazy madness that happens every August and January, although it wouldn’t be possible for both windows to operate in tandem.
It might make for a more through selection process if clubs know they will have to stick with who they have until a window is open for change and maybe a move away from the same old names that crop up job after job.
Although it may not stop managerial sackings completely, it may give stability to the position and if huge compensation clauses can be inserted into contracts as a standard option, while clubs can pay it they aren’t going to get their man until the window opens and by then the season could well have turned around in their favour, who would want to upset the momentum then!
