The Liverpool Lip: Why Oxlade-Chamberlain is a fine signing for the Reds

A day before the transfer window closes, Arsenal have accepted Liverpool’s £35million bid for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The midfielder will undergo a medical this evening at St George’s Park.

After months of rumours over whether Liverpool and Oxlade-Chamberlain were linked, the truth has come into clarity. The 24-year-old will make the Merseyside move just a day before the summer transfer window closes.

Arsenal informed the Reds earlier this year that their Number 15 was not for sale and wouldn’t be leaving the club. However, after current reigning champions Chelsea joined the bidding, the Gunners had a change of heart.

After Liverpool matched Chelsea’s offer, Arsenal gave Chamberlain the green light to leave.

Turned down a higher wage-packet

Chelsea also offered Chamberlain a wage rise which he turned down. He will play out a 6-year signing with the Reds under a £125,000 a week contract which is a significant pay cut from his current £180,000 wage with Arsenal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has turned down more money to play for a team he’s obviously had his heart set on for a while now. That needs to be respected. Not a lot of footballers nowadays simply play for the passion and for the legacy of the club.

Football has become a very money-driven sport, and it’s refreshing for a player not to be interested in the money side of it. Liverpool fans don’t take kindly to money grabbers, which is all the more reason everyone will love the new boy over at Anfield.

Even when being interviewed about Arsenal’s success in the FA Cup final against Chelsea last season, the Ox turned the topic onto how much he wanted to be Steven Gerrard growing up.

He’s definitely destined for greatness with Liverpool with that kind of ambition.

What Chamberlain will bring to LFC

There’s been speculation over whether Liverpool actually need Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and some have criticised Klopp claiming there’s bigger fish to fry. But the London lad will be an important asset to the team going forward in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

With a pretty packed midfield already, it may seem like there’s no room at the inn for Chamberlain, but that’s not the case.

Despite during the ironic 4-0 win against Arsenal, the performance of Liverpool’s starting midfielders has been lacklustre and lethargic. With more eager players on the bench, it will help revive the lost creativity in the centre of the team.

Chamberlain’s stats may not be the most overwhelming but his work ethic is faultless. His versatility will be key for when Liverpool face tougher opponents and when injuries strike main players.

Is he destined for life on the Liverpool bench? I don’t think he minds at this point. The idea of being an Anfield super sub seems to please the lad and it looks like he’s itching to get into his new shirt.

Welcome, Alex

Oxlade-Chamberlain marks Liverpool’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window and fans have given him a very warm reception. His attitude and commitment seems to bode well with them – humbleness goes a long way at Liverpool FC.

The question now is, will Klopp cram any last minute signings in before the deadline? Talks of Thomas Lemar joining the club are becoming more frequent and sources strongly believe Virgil van Dijk is also on his way.

But whilst rumours remain unconfirmed, the only thing left to say is a huge welcome to the club, Alex!
