Spain has put a tricky start to the Euros behind them and made a strong case for being tournament favourites in France.
Spain picked apart Turkey 3-0 thanks to their puppet master Andres Iniesta. La Roja rookie Nolito shined as well, pouncing on an error from Mehmet Topal to score as well as created a goal for Alvaro Morata, who got a brace.
The reigning European champions have sealed their place in the knockout rounds before having to face their toughest opponent, Croatia, who need a win, but have to do without talisman Luka Modric after collapsing against the Czech Republic despite being 2-0 up.
Hunger restored
Right now, Spain looks like they have regained that hunger that they lacked in the previous major tournament.
Spanish magician Andres Iniesta, who is looking like a strong contender for Player of the Tournament after finding his best form, is pulling the strings for La Roja and hasn’t looked a day older since his equally masterful displays in Poland and Ukraine in 2012.
Up front, Alvaro Morata seems to have found his scoring boots and if he keeps them on, he may be on his way to win his first European Championship.
Solid back-line
At the back, Spain’s back four has looked solid so far, despite pushing up a very high line. Spain’s stronghold on possession also ensured the back four don’t really have plenty of defending to do.
However, La Roja’s first true test still lies ahead, as they will possibly be playing against Italy, whose back three have looked impenetrable.
Still thriving with talent
Early on, I predicted that Spain will be favourites and so far they have not disappointed. La Roja for now have rubbished claims that their era of dominance is over.
Spain’s wealth of talent have ensured a continuity of tiki-taka dominance for the foreseeable future.
I wouldn’t bet against Spain successfully defending their European crown.
