Mo Salah or De Bruyne: Who should be named PFA Player of the Year?

We have reached that time of the year when people start talking about who the best player of the season should be. Kevin De Bruyne and Mo Salah have been labeled as the favorites to win this year’s award, but who deserves it more?

Kevin De Blue

De Bruyne has been the hub of an impressive Manchester City side that has bossed the Premier League all season. Under Pep Guardiola the Belgian is showing his high quality, which we all know he had but to greater extent.

Entrusted in a deeper role from what he used to, the former Chelsea man has not only managed to create chances and provide assists but is also excelling at dictating the play. His superb form is one of the main reasons why the Citizens are closing in on the league title and already secured the League Cup.

They also have their sights firmly set on the Champions League as they hope to accomplish The Treble.

De Bruyne scored 7 goals in the Premier League so far this season and has 14 assists. His total pass accuracy stands at an impressive 83.4%. His manager even said that he could be a future Ballon D’or winner.

‘We’ve got Salah…’

When Mo Salah was signed by Liverpool in the summer he had his fair share of doubters. His previous stint in the Premier League ended rather abruptly and poorly but after shining in Fiorentina and Roma the Egyptian has hit the ground running at Merseyside.

Salah already has 28 goals and 9 assists in the league. After his impressive four goal haul against Watford the voices that want him to be named player of the year have intensified. Salah is blossoming under a manager who knows how to best exploit his qualities. His partnership with the hardworking duo of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane has benefited him.

Both players have been mesmerizing this season but only one can win the best player award. There are good arguments you can make for both players.

You could say that De Bruyne has the edge as he is part of one of the best teams the Premier League has seen in a long time. At the end of the season the Belgian will have a league title to show for all his troubles. His team is also on course to break the points tally in the league.

Understandably many football fans and especially Liverpool ones will find it hard to fathom anyone other than Salah winning the award. Some even have gone as far as to comparing him to Lionel Messi. While that is an overstretch there is no denying how brilliant the 25-year-old has been this season. His numbers speak for  themselves.

Salah is on course to win the golden boot and that seems a fair reflection of his season. A player of the year award along with that is something no one, perhaps including Salah, has predicted before the season. However, De Bruyne will also fancy his chances of beating the Egyptian to the award.

Two impressive players with their own peculiar qualities are going head-to-head to in one of the most exciting battles to be named the best.

Who will be the winner? We just have to wait and see.
