Sebastian Giovinco may not have ever reached star status in his time in Serie A.

But since joining Toronto FC in January 2015 the Italian forward has established himself as one of Major League Soccer’s top players.

On-field performances

The 30-year-old has been a consistent goalscorer and playmaker since the start of his MLS career.

In his first season in the league the former Juventus player topped the scoring charts with 22 goals and also led the league in assist with 16.

His stellar MLS debut season earned him the 2015 MVP award, Newcomer of the Year award, and Golden Boot award.

Giovinco fell to third in the scoring charts in the 2016 season and second in assist, but he continued to lead Toronto FC in both categories while guiding them to their first ever winning season.

Halfway through the 2017 season, the three time All-Stars quality has continued to produce on the pitch.

In just two and a half seasons the quick and clinical forward already has scored 50 goals, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Few have contributed so much so quickly in league history.

Reversed the league fortunes of a fledgling franchise

Before Giovinco’s arrival, Toronto’s league history was rife with misery. They had never made a playoff appearance nor had a winning record.

Partly due to the Italian national, Toronto FC’s recent league history has been filled with success rather than failure.

In his MVP winning season Giovinco helped Toronto FC make their first ever playoff appearance and avoid a losing regular season record for the first time in their history.

Toronto FC rose to even greater heights in Giovinco’s second season at the club.

With consistent contributions from the speedy forward throughout the 2016 season Toronto FC achieved their first ever winning regular season record, won an Eastern Conference Title, and made an MLS Cup finals appearance.

An conference title is not the only silverware Giovinco has helped bring to Toronto.

In the past two seasons Giovinco has scored in consecutive Canadian Championship finals, both of which Toronto FC won.

It is clearly no coincidence Toronto FC’s newfound success in the league coincides with the arrival and performance of Giovinco.

Already a record breaker

The 30-year-old has already broken team and league records.

Giovinco is Toronto FC’s all-time leading scorer, holds the MLS record for most combined goals and assist in a season, and holds the MLS record for most direct free kick goals.

The Toronto FC cornerstone is on the cusp of breaking into the top 50 of the league’s all-time leading scorers list. At his current goal scoring rate, Giovinco is on track to top that list by the end of his career.

All-time MLS great in the making

Prolific scorer, award winner, record breaker, and future all time great are all titles that are applicable to Giovinco’s MLS career.
