Arsenal are set for a £70 million raid on Sporting Lisbon as they seek to acquire William Carvalho and Gelson Martins.

According to The Sun, Arsene Wenger wants to beef up his midfield with the signing of Carvalho – the Portuguese international has perpetually been linked to the Gunners and definite interest exists.

Martins, who scored 7 goals in 43 appearances last time out has also been identified as a useful squad players, with his ability to play as a winger and as full-back complementing the 3-4-3 system that Wenger introduced during the final weeks of the season.

The Verdict

With Lacazette signing on as a Gunner, it would be surprising to see Wenger splash over a £100 million in the space of a week.

Yet, the race for a top-four finish never relents and last season’s failure to cement a top-four spot could be seen as a wakeup call for the Frenchman.

Carvalho and Martins would be astute additions, adding quality and class, whilst ensuring there is sufficient squad depth for what will be a gruelling season.
