Mesut Ozil: Why criticism of the Arsenal star is over the top

Mesut Ozil, one of the biggest names in modern day football, is going through a bad phase.

Football pundits have not only criticized his game, but also blamed him for being ‘lazy’. He is not committed to his future with Arsenal, they say.

If a contract extension is not agreed upon, Arsenal risks losing both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

Of late, Mesut Ozil hasn’t featured for Arsenal in key games due to poor form and injury issues. While much is expected out of him, he has just managed to play only 7 games in which he has scored and assisted just once.

Despite the dry run, critics shouldn’t overlook the potential of the star player.

Ozil is one of those players who grabs opportunities as well as creates them for himself. Since arriving at Arsenal, he has scored 24 goals and 43 assists in 123 appearances. This is in no way an ordinary track record.

While competition is equally strong, writing off Ozil completely might not be the best option. He is an integral part of the squad and brings a quality to the field which many teams aspire to have.

Wenger still an admirer

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has in the past come to his defense.

He brushed off the critics saying that no footballer is perfect and that each one has their own weaknesses. Despite the bad phase in Ozil’s career, Wenger has reaffirmed his support.

He said that he believes Ozil will come back stronger and help Arsenal finish in the top 3 this season.
