Mesut Ozil could be set for a surprising return to his hometown club Schalke 04.
The creative spark has long been locked in contract disputes at Arsenal and has refused to put pen to paper, with fellow star Alexis Sanchez also not committing his future.
The Daily Mirror are suggesting that Ozil could instead move back to Germany, despite links with Manchester United.
This report seems a tad strange, given Ozil had been disputing the salary he had been offered – purportedly, anyway – and it is very unlikely his demands will be met by the Bundesliga club.
Though the allure of returning to his boyhood club, where he made his breakthrough, might trump monetary demands.
His scintillating performance in mid-week against Spurs has demonstrated he still has the ability to play at the top level; it seems it is just a matter of aptitude and industry.
A return to Schalke would signal the decline of his career, but Saturday’s showing suggests he still has the quality to play at the top level for a few more years – it might be wiser, for Ozil, to move to a club of similar, if not better, prestige than Arsenal to maximise his career.
