Arsenal cemented second spot in the Barclays Premier League table with an excellent 2-1 victory over title rivals Manchester City on Monday night.
The Gunners ran out deserved 2-1 winners at the Emirates, and it was no surprise to see Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud at the forefront of Arsenal’s crucial victory. After a tense 30 minutes, the home side upped the intensity and the influential Mesut Ozil was up to his old tricks again.
Firstly, the Germany international passed to Theo Walcott for the winger to superbly fire Arsene Wenger’s side a goal up – he then slotted a typical through-ball to the in-form Giroud, who cooly beat Joe Hart on the stroke of half-time, which proved to be enough to secure a vital three points.
Worthy victory
Arsenal were well worthy of their narrow victory that puts them just two points behind surprise leaders Leicester City. Arguably, the win gives the north London club their best chance since the 2003-2004 season to lift the Premier League trophy – and the form of Ozil and Giroud just proves why.
Ozil’s two assists on Monday night were his 14th and 15th of what has been a remarkable campaign for the German. Also, Giroud’s strike made it six in his last four games, and an incredible 15 for the season. These two have become essential to Arsenal’s title aspirations, and neither of them are showing any signs of letting up.
Devastating partnership
The duo have struck up a devastating partnership and it looks as though they know each others games inside and out. Both players have had their critics since arriving at the Emirates, but nobody can fault their skill and application at present.
With important players to return from injury, the Gunners are now favourites to secure their fourth Premier League title – and in Ozil and Giroud, Wenger has two world class players at his disposal, who are vital to his side’s cause.
