Premier League champions Chelsea are gearing up to splurge £120 million on three players.

A report in today’s Mirror, suggests that Antonio Conte will aim to recruit Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Virgil van Dijk and Danny Drinkwater.

It now seems apparent that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is now ready to back Conte’s spending plans after a frosty summer where rumours circulated over a break-down in the relationship between the pair.

Why these three?

Oxlade-Chamberlain has only a year left on his contract and Arsenal will face a dilemma if the Blues submit a reasonable bid – Conte’s side has long been linked with the English international over the summer.

Van Dijk too has been the subject of much transfer speculation after his move to Liverpool broke down following an official complaint from Southampton FC.

A move for Drinkwater seemingly comes off the back of the sale of Nemanja Matic, who Conte is said to have not wanted to let go, especially to so fierce a rival.

The Verdict

Chelsea has a very thin squad and with the task of Champions League football thrown into the mix of domestic aims, Conte desperately needs new recruits.

This £120 million bank roll would not inspire many Chelsea fans, but it would be shrewd investment and be crucial to building a squad capable of competing on various fronts this season.
