Why Newcastle would be better off not signing Liverpool hero

Rafa Benitez

Putting the cart before the horse isn’t always advisable for any club in the world but with 4 points off the drop zone and with ten games to go in the Premier League, manager Rafa Benitez can start drawing out his list of transfer targets for next season with the Newcastle heading towards safety.

The magic number of staying up in the Premier League has always been the 40 points mark and with the Toons already on 32 points, 3 wins should be able to guarantee their safety in the League.

However, while the 40 points mark still remains the main objective for Newcastle this term, it is also imperative for Rafa Benitez to start planning ahead for next season and ensure the six times FA Cup winners give a better showing in the Premier League by targeting atleast a top half finish in the division next term.

During the winter transfer window, veteran striker Fernando Torres was heavily linked with a loan move to the St. James’ Park following the Magpies struggles in front of goal.

Although, the move failed to materialize but a move for the Spanish striker in the summer looks uncertain considering his age.

The 34-year-old played one of his best football under manager Rafa Benitez at Liverpool as he was often regarded as one of the most prolific strikers in the world due to his brilliance in front of goal for the Reds.

Meanwhile, with the Atletico Madrid striker no longer at the peak of his powers having scored just 7 times in 33 games for the Los Rojiblancos this season across all competitions, Newcastle would be better off going for a hungrier and younger striker that can cope well with the physicality and demands of the Premier League.
