Manchester City are set to snatch Ivan Rakitic from Manchester United in a stunning move, reports the Daily Star.

Manchester United were purportedly keen on the Croatian midfielder, with Jose Mourinho seeing him as a like-for-like replacements for the ageing Michael Carrick.

But, in a move that will only fuel the rivalry between Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, City are set to splash £42 million to acquire his services.

Missing Gundogan

Guardiola is looking for someone to shore up a midfield that has seen Ilkay Gundogan face a cruel injury, Fernandinho face several reds already this season and one that includes the unconvincing Yaya Toure.

Rakitic was left out of Barcelona’s squad in their La Liga clash with Villarreal, citing ‘technical reasons’. This vague excuse has fuelled rumours even more.

Perfect for Pep

The skilful midfielder would appear to be Pep’s perfect player – technically gifted with an eye for a pass, the Croatian could form a formidable partnership with David Silva.

It is said the City boss sees Rakitic as one to marshal the midfield and initiate attacks; his link up play with Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Sterling and Aguero could be a tantalising prospect.
