3 Superstars To Improve Manchester City’s Title-Winning Team

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team have been nothing short of unplayable at times this season, with the Citizens running away with the Premier League title.

The challenge for the Etihad Stadium outfit next season will be to retain their place at English football’s summit, while challenging for the Champions League crown also.

Naturally one eye will turn to this summer’s transfer market, with it interesting to see who Guardiola will look to sign to make City an even-more ominous prospect.

Despite the strength of the Citizens ranks, here are three men that would improve the collective ahead of 2018-19.

Marco Verratti

Fernandinho has been an essential cog in the City wheel for a number of seasons and his importance to ensuring Guardiola’s tactics work cannot be understated.

With so many attacking talents in the side, the Brazil international plays a pivotal role anchoring the midfield and adds balance to the starting XI.

However, City have become reliant on Fernandinho, with no real other option for Guardiola in the holding midfield role.

With the South American getting older, having someone like Marco Verratti to contest a starting role would be a big boost for the City squad.

The Paris Saint-Germain and Italy star has a delightful range of passing, high energy, a tenacity that is sometimes understated and age on his side.

Although his current employers may be reluctant to part company with him, Verratti would be an impressive new signing for City this summer.

David Alaba

While Kyle Walker has made the right-back slot his own since joining City from Tottenham Hotspur last summer, the left-back position still could be improved.

Benjamin Mendy was impressive in his early days at the Etihad Stadium but a serious injury has kept the former Monaco man on the sidelines over recent months.

Although Fabian Delph has done a decent job playing out of position at full-back, a new specialised left-back to challenge Mendy for a starting berth next season would be a shrewd investment.

City have the financial backing and allure to bring some of the world’s best players to the club and David Alaba would certainly fit into this category.

The Bayern Munich star’s athleticism, ability on the ball and footballing intelligence would certainly fit into Guardiola’s style of play.

Although tempting the Bundesliga champions to part company with their youth-team graduate could be difficult, the Austria international would be a great addition.

Guardiola will know better than anyone about the gifted defender’s ability given his time managing him at Bayern.

Versatile enough to cover other positions also, Alaba would certainly improve this already impressive City side.

Dries Mertens

Guardiola was keen to bring an extra wide player to City in the January transfer window, but the champions lost out to Manchester United in the race to land Alexis Sanchez and Leicester City played hardball in their attempts to sign Riyad Mahrez.

The Premier League giants are expected to resume their search for an addition winger this summer, with a new player set to provide competition for places to Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling.

Although City may be tempted to return for Mahrez, Napoli star Dries Mertens would be an exciting alternative.

The Belgium international has been a key reason that the San Paolo outfit are fighting for the Serie A title this term, with the 30-year-old scoring 45 goals over the last two seasons.

Able to play centrally also, Mertens is most effective on the flank and is good enough to play on either wing.

Adding the Belgian attacker to the already star-studded City attacking unit would be an imposing move this summer.
