Chris Smalling: Why the defender is set to depart Old Trafford

Chris Smalling is set for a shock exit from Manchester United.

The Daily Telegraph are reporting that the England international no longer features in Jose Mourinho’s plans and he could be available for around £15 million.

The Telegraph propose that Mourinho does not see Smalling as being good enough to establish himself in his starting eleven, and grew tired of Smalling’s apparent lack of commitment – he missed six weeks of the season through an injury just as the big matches came thick and fast.

West Ham, Everton and West Brom are all interested in securing Smalling’s signature.

The imminent arrival of Victor Lindelof has undoubtedly prompted this story as Mourinho now has five centre-backs at the club; if this story is true, then Mourinho has evidently selected the four he trusts the most.

Namely, Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones.

However, any club who manages to sign Smalling will have a very competent defender. Perhaps not good enough for the elite of the Premier League, but still reliable nonetheless.

In today’s market, £15 million would also represent a steal.
