REPORTS: Manchester United keen on signing Chelsea outcast

Manchester United are set to table a shock bid for exiled Chelsea defender David Luiz.

Jose Mourinho will seek to rescue Luiz from his exile and bring him to Old Trafford, according to the Daily Express.

Luiz has fallen out with Blues boss Antonio Conte since Luiz’s errors in Chelsea’s humbling 3-0 loss to Roma two weeks ago, and has not featured for his club since.

The Brazilian is understood to be feeling humiliated at Conte out-casting him and is intent on a move away.

The Verdict

This move seems strange, on two levels.

Firstly, it was Mourinho who sanctioned Luiz’s £50 million sale to PSG and said “he would not be missed” when Luiz departed. Luiz then taunted Mourinho after PSG knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League a year later.

This feud aside, Luiz’s defending abilities are questionable. One has to ask whether he would bring any value to a United defence which has been solid and compact under Mourinho.

United really shouldn’t pursue Luiz; he is error-prone and complacent in his defensive duties and a swoop for him would set United’s transfer budget back significantly.

There are much better, reliable defensive options in the market.
