Newcastle United are lining up a shock move for Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, according to reports in The Daily Star.
Reports on TalkSport, also suggest the Dutch international could be available for as little as £9 million representing fantastic value in a climate of hyper-inflated transfer fees.
Cillessen has featured just once for Barcelona this year, in a cup match, and is purportedly desperate for a move away.
Newcastle, under the savvy management of Rafa Benitez, have conceded just 10 goals in 11 games this season.
This suggests their defence is disciplined and sufficient, yet a complacent attitude might yet produce a weakness; clubs must always look forward and look to improve, regardless of how good a component of their side is.
Cillessen would represent a major upgrade on United’s current goalkeeping options and would suggest genuine ambition on Tyneside.
With new owners apparently imminent, a move for Cillessen would demonstrate a yearning to compete at a higher level. At £9 million, too, this would shrewd business. United should certainly seek to bring Cillessen to St James’ Park if he is indeed available.
