Premier League: The most competitive league in the world… really?

The excitement is so inviting,Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over rivals United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon saw Pep Guardiola’s side move 11 points clear at the top.

No, your eyes do not deceive you: the leaders of the most competitive league in the world have an ELEVEN-point lead over their nearest challengers, if you can call them that.

In truth, no one could have had any complaints had the Citizens won the match by a five or six goal margin. Their performance really was that dominant, and they really are so much better than anyone else in the English Premier League.

The fact they hold such a considerable lead – many would call it insurmountable already – tells us a lot about a certain myth which has been driven by the mainstream British media for several years now.

The fact City now hold such a considerable lead at the summit of what is consistently billed as the most competitive league of all won’t go unnoticed in countries such as France and Germany, with Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga often ridiculed for being one horse races.

While Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich hold eight and nine point leads in their respective divisions, this merely puts them on a par with the EPL.

The likes of United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool will be left to feed off scraps and have already been reduced to fighting for places in next season’s UEFA Champions League group stage.

Monaco, Lyon and Marseille will do likewise in France. The likes of RB Leipzig, Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and several others will follow suit in Germany.

So, why bother to keep up all the pretence and peddle the myth that the Premier League is so much more competitive and exciting than its continental counterparts?

With the notable exception of the incredible football played by Guardiola’s magnificent team, the overall quality on show is inferior to that which we see in other major leagues such as La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga.

With Pep at the helm, and a burning desire to constantly improve in everything they do both on and off the pitch, there is very little to stop Manchester City building a dynasty similar to those enjoyed by PSG and Bayern in recent years.

They are, at this moment in time, lightyears ahead of anyone else in the league which can no longer lay claim to being the best and most competitive in the world.
