Ex-Arsenal manager says United need four signings to compete for the title. Here’s who could fit the bill.

Arsene Wenger has recently stated that “[Manchester United] aren’t as far away as people think” from winning the Premier League. He believes that “…they need - in my opinion - four first team players. But around those players, I see a squad that is capable of challenging.”

With United’s dismal record in the Premier League this season, here are four players who, money no object, could fit the bill.

Paulo Dybala

After ditching Lukaku to Inter, United came oh-so-close to nabbing Dybala from Juventus in the same transfer window.

But the deal fell through, leaving just Rashford and James as first-choice strikers. Although the 21-year-old has shone this season, United still desperately need more attacking options, and Dybala would fit the bill nicely.

Casemiro

Next on the list is the central midfield, where Matic and McTominay have been found lacking several times over the past few seasons. Ever since Fellaini was signed under David Moyes, United have struggled to fill the role of the commanding defensive midfielder.

Casemiro could help unleash the attacking creativity of Paul Pogba. He’s also a proven talent, and incredibly consistent, however he hasn’t yet been tested in the Premier League.

This issue is, with Real Madrid’s defense looking shaky last season, they would be quite unlike to let go of such an important player, unless the Brazillian tried to force a move when his contract ends in 2021.

Karim Benzema

United could also try to raid Madrid for Benzema, depending on the role that Dybala would fill. They tried for Mandžukić last summer, but Benzema would be a better fit, provided he was available.

Dybala plays most of his games at CAM or winger for Juventus, not as a striker. Therefore, if he were to replace Martial on the left, or work with Pogba in the midfield, United would still need a new striker to compete for spots with Rashford/James.

As an out-and-out goal scorer, Benzema would be a great pick. He’d also add some much-needed maturity to United’ front line.

Jadon Sancho

Signing England youngster Jadon Sancho would add a ton of extra flair to Manchester United’s attack.

With Martial on the left, Dybala/Pogba in the middle, Benzema/Rashford up top, and Sancho on the right, it would be quite hard to see how this attack wouldn’t score heaps of goals. In saying this, United have struggled to put together a consistent squad ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left, despite Mourinho’s best efforts.

No matter how good United look on paper, Solskjær has to get the attack working well together if the team are to win games.

But what about the defense?

United have had an abysmal defensive record recently. But the club has already made signings to try and improve in this area. With an injury-free squad, the defense has quite a lot of depth to it.

Ed Woodward could consider picking up another center back to compete with Eric Bailly, once he returns from injury. However, finding a solid defensive midfielder should be a much higher priority for Manchester United at the moment.
