Over the past few days Liverpool have been linked with Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic.  He joined the Galácticos last August from Inter for €31 million (£24.3m).

But now he is in pursuit from clubs such as Juventus, AC Milan, and AS Roma (Sky Italia).

Kovacic has been struggling to make a real mark in Spain as he started only 11 games in all competitions, and failed to make the Champions League final squad last month.

It even took him more than 20 months to score his first Serie A goal, so why should Liverpool even been interested in him?

Gifted

Well the Croatian is technically strong, and has vision, with the ability to pinpoint a pass.  Former Liverpool and Napoli manager Rafael Benítez has praised Kovacic in the past, and stated that he was a “quality midfielder”.

Kovacic may have made few appearances for Real Madrid, but surely it’s hard to gain a place in any team with the likes of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, James Rodríguez and Isco also competing for places in midfield.

Kovacic is seen as quite a versatile individual, and can play in a number of roles in the midfield position.

He has the footwork and finesse to deceive a defender.

Gets overrun, but his creativity is worth giving him a go

The Real Madrid man provides that extra bit of creativity the Reds are craving for. However, there are times when he often seems to get lost and overrun as a number 10.

Nevertheless the thought of an attacking midfield partnership with Kovacic and Phillipe Coutinho is mouth-watering, and will only boost Liverpool’s bid to get back into the top four.
