According to UK’s The Metro, Arsenal is going toe to toe with Chelsea for Lazio center-back Stefan de Vrij.

As stated by The Metro:

“The Italian giants are determined to keep hold of De Vrij, who has been a key performer for them since joining from Feyenoord in the summer of 2014.

AC Milan are also believed to be admirers of the 24-year-old’s talents, and Lazio face a real fight to keep him as he stalls on extending his contract, which is currently set to expire at the end of next season.

According to La Repubblica, Arsenal and Chelsea have both made approaches for the Netherlands international this season as his future looks increasingly in doubt.

Both clubs could do with more options in defence, with Chelsea missing out on a number of their top targets during the summer, eventually settling for a surprise move to re-sign David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day.

Arsenal, meanwhile, could be looking to replace the ageing Per Mertesacker, who is in the final year of his contract, with Arsene Wenger having little in the way of backup to first choice defensive pairing Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.”

Is he needed?

De Vrij is a talented center-back, who has become one of the key men behind Lazio’s fine start this season.

However, with Arsenal signing Mustafi and for good money and performing well so far alongside Koscielny, is it worth spending on the Dutchman?

If Mertesacker is set to leave and with the Lazio defender’s contract set to expire, then why not? For me, de Vrij could be another of signal of intent and a long-term back-up for Koscielny.
