Although their EFL Cup defeat at the hands of West Ham came as a blow, Chelsea will be pretty happy with the start that they have made to life under Antonio Conte.

Top teams are always looking to strengthen their squad, however, and recent reports in the Daily Star suggest that the Blues are interested in signing Angel Di Maria.

Unhappy under Emery

The 28-year-old winger doesn’t seem to be enjoying life at Paris Saint-Germain under new boss Unai Emery, failing to score in any of his nine appearances in Ligue 1.

This is in stark contrast to his debut campaign at the club, when the Argentina international was directly involved in 28 top-flight goals, scoring ten and assisting 18.

That United stint

Manchester United fans know only too well how Di Maria can struggle under the wrong coach, though the big-money signing still managed ten Premier League assists during his one season at Old Trafford.

At his best, the 28-year-old can be simply unplayable, though he needs to feel loved in order to deliver the goods on a consistent basis.

Asset

Despite his wobbly stint with Man United, Di Maria remains a top quality, world-class player, who can be an asset to any side. He can dribble, make darting runs, score and has fantastic vision and creativity.

The Argentine can play either on the wings or even behind the striker as a playmaker. At 28, he’s at the prime of his career, so if there’s any truth to the reports, then it’s better for the Blues to make a move for him now.

Good for the Blues

However, what would that mean for the likes of Fabregas and Oscar? Hazard and Willian are two other players who may have their positions compromised.

But to me, that just means more competition. Competition which could inspire aforementioned players to prove their worth and undoubted qualities, which we all know they possess.
